Multiple damage detection in complex bridges based on strain energy extracted from single point measurement

Alireza ARABHA NAJAFABADI, Farhad DANESHJOO, Hamid Reza AHMADI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3,   Pages 722-730 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0624-5

Abstract: Strain Energy of the structure can be changed with the damage at the damage location. The accurate detection of the damage location using this index in a force system is dependent on the degree of accuracy in determining the structure deformation function before and after damage. The use of modal-based methods to identify damage in complex bridges is always associated with problems due to the need to consider the effects of higher modes and the adverse effect of operational conditions on the extraction of structural modal parameters. In this paper, the deformation of the structure was determined by the concept of influence line using the Betti-Maxwell theory. Then two damage detection indicators were developed based on strain energy variations. These indices were presented separately for bending and torsion changes. Finite element analysis of a five-span concrete curved bridge was done to validate the stated methods. Damage was simulated by decreasing stiffness at different sections of the deck. The response regarding displacement of a point on the deck was measured along each span by passing a moving load on the bridge at very low speeds. Indicators of the strain energy extracted from displacement influence line and the strain energy extracted from the rotational displacement influence line (SERIL) were calculated for the studied bridge. The results show that the proposed methods have well identified the location of the damage by significantly reducing the number of sensors required to record the response. Also, the location of symmetric damages is detected with high resolution using SERIL.

Cellular automata based multi-bit stuck-at fault diagnosis for resistive memory Research Article

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 7,   Pages 1110-1126 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100255

Abstract: This paper presents a group-based dynamic scheme intended for resistive random-access memory (ReRAM). Traditional static random-access memory, dynamic random-access memory, NAND, and NOR flash memory are limited by their scalability, power, package density, and so forth. Next-generation memory types like ReRAMs are considered to have various advantages such as high package density, non-volatility, scalability, and low power consumption, but has been a problem. Unreliable memory operation is caused by permanent stuck-at faults due to extensive use of write- or memory-intensive workloads. An increased number of stuck-at faults also prematurely limit chip lifetime. Therefore, a cellular automaton (CA) based dynamic stuck-at fault-tolerant design is proposed here to combat unreliable cell functioning and variable cell lifetime issues. A scalable, block-level fault diagnosis and recovery scheme is introduced to ensure readable data despite multi-bit stuck-at faults. The scheme is a novel approach because its goal is to remove all the restrictions on the number and nature of stuck-at faults in general fault conditions. The proposed scheme is based on Wolfram's null boundary and periodic boundary CA theory. Various special classes of CAs are introduced for 100% fault tolerance: (SACAs), (TACAs), and (MACAs). The target micro-architectural unit is designed with optimal space overhead.

Analysis of the treatment outcomes of esophageal variceal bleeding patients from multiple centers in

WANG Zhiqiang

Frontiers of Medicine 2008, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 171-173 doi: 10.1007/s11684-008-0031-0

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the treatment outcomes of esophageal variceal bleeding (EVB) in China. A total of 1087 cases were collected from 19 hospitals in 16 large and medium sized cities across China between January 1st, 2005 and January 1st, 2006. There were 313 cases (29.0%) of mild (<400 mL), 494 cases (45.8%) of moderate (400–1500 mL) and 272 cases (25.2%) of severe (>1500 mL) bleeding. Successful hemostasis was achieved in 89.8% of cases. Seven hundred and eighty-five cases were treated by medication with a hemostasis rate of 91.8%. Seventy-one cases were treated using a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube with a hemostasis rate of 54.9%. Thirty-seven cases were treated with emergency endoscopic variceal ligation with a hemostasis rate of 83.8%. Seventy-seven cases were treated with endoscopic sclerotherapy with a hemostasis rate of 94.8%. Forty-three cases were treated with emergency surgical operation with a hemostasis rate of 95.3%. Sixty-six cases were treated with combined therapy with a hemostasis rate of 97.0%. There was a significant difference ( < 0.01) in the successful hemostasis rate between different treatments. The overall mortality was 10.1%, among which 6.6% was directly caused by bleeding. The multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that the severity of bleeding, treatment methods, liver dysfunction and activation of hepatitis were predictive factors for successful hemostasis. Most cases of EVB were mild and moderate in severity. The first-line treatment for EVB is medication. Emergency endoscopic intervention has not been widely available yet. The overall management outcome of EVB has been improved.
